On the 21st May 2011 we took a rail journey behind the Class 8P 4-6-2 Pacific, the "Duke of Gloucester" designed by Robert Riddles for use by British Railways. Beginning our journey at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury we were diesel hauled to Carlisle, steam hauled over the famous Settle Carlisle railway line to Crewe and finally again diesel hauled back to our early morning departure point. A memorable day packed with nostalgia, the smell of steam, hot oil and smoke and the unique sound of a hard working Class 8P 4-6-2 Pacific. A digitally recorded sound track of the Duke ascending the Langho incline, the hardest climb of the day, accompanies the slideshow.
