America from Coast to Coast by Amtrak

In September of 2008 we crossed America from coast to coast by train from New York to San Francisco. The journey took 21 days and included time in Washington, Chicago, Denver, Grand Junction, Durango, Flagstaff and Los Angeles. On the way we viewed the Rocky Mountains, visited Silverton, Sedona and Jerome, travelled on Route 66 to Williams, passed through Monument Valley, peered over the edge of the Grand Canyon and experienced overnight the splendour of the Queen Mary moored at Long Beach. And we rode on the cable cars of San Francisco.

I have endeavoured to capture the essence of the country with the following record of that journey. We hope you enjoy the photographs as much as we enjoyed our 21 days in America.

A long weekend in Surrey staying in the middle of England's largest vineyard near Dorking.
Box Hill, Leith Hill and the North Downs on the doorstep to say nothing of a bottle of "Surrey Gold" chilled for one's return after a day walking.

Suffolk and Essex

Having never been to Suffolk or for that matter, Essex except for a swift drive through to Harwich to catch a ferry, we decided to do "Constable Country" and the surrounding area.

nine glorious days in Scotland and one in Northumberland

On a ten day motoring holiday in Scotland one could assume that there would be rain on most days. However apart from a brief shower whilst circumnavigating Edinburgh it was blue sky and
"top down" all the way. The countryside is breathtaking and I hope that my photographs do the scenery justice.

If you desire to trace our steps then we can most earnestly recommend the Braeburn Guest House in Fort William, Dromnan Guest House in Ullapool, Brae House near Shebster and finally, the Avalon Guest House in Inverness.

seven days in Devon and Cornwall

A beautiful part of the country I have only rarely visited. Photographs are taken at Rosemoor (the south west garden of the Royal Horticultural Society), the coastal path near Bude, Morwellham Quay on the River Tamar, The Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the busy port of Looe, St. Enodoc Church (the final resting place of Sir John Betjeman, poet of the common man), the gardens of the Hotel Endsleigh, Buckfast Abbey and finally, it's all aboard for a nostalgic train journey on the South Devon Railway.

the Lake District

The English Lake District, not the easiest of places to photograph, it always seems to be raining but beautiful all the same.
Walked by my wife and I since our teens, we spent our honeymoon here 39 years ago and still to this day, albeit not on the high fells, it's an enchanting place to be.

Arneke War Graves, northern France

My wife's uncle, by the evening of the 28th April 1918 he was 20 years old and dead.

Buried here midst the sunlit corn fields of northern France and under a perpetual blue sky, rest in peace.

Swiss scenery, flowers and a train

Our Swiss Holiday in the year of 2004. The photographs were taken with my Leica M6, the lenses being the 35mm f2.0 Summicron and the 90mm f2.8 Elmarit. The film was Kodachrome 64 and the slides were scanned using a Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV. Final digital processing was achieved using Adobe Photoshop 7.

I hope you will enjoy this beautiful part of Switzerland as seen through my camera lens.
