In September of 2008 we crossed America from coast to coast by train from New York to San Francisco. The journey took 21 days and included time in Washington, Chicago, Denver, Grand Junction, Durango, Flagstaff and Los Angeles. On the way we viewed the Rocky Mountains, visited Silverton, Sedona and Jerome, travelled on Route 66 to Williams, passed through Monument Valley, peered over the edge of the Grand Canyon and experienced overnight the splendour of the Queen Mary moored at Long Beach. And we rode on the cable cars of San Francisco. I have endeavoured to capture the essence of the country with the following record of that journey. My wife and I hope you enjoy the photographs as much as we enjoyed our 21 days in America. And to add to your enjoyment the slideshow starts with the sound of an Amtrak freight train passing through Flagstaff.
