In September/October of 2013 we visited America again flying from London Heathrow to Boston's Logan Airport. This time our visit was to New England specifically to see the spectacular foliage which is a feature of the region at this time of the year. As you will see from the pictures, we were not disappointed. From the town of Falmouth on Cape Cod we visited Hyannis which has close connections with the Kennedys and took a boat trip to Martha's Vineyard circumnavigating the island on what was originally a school bus. From Falmouth we returned via Plymouth to Boston where we boarded the Amtrak "Downeaster" for the journey north to Portland. Moving on to North Conway by coach we climbed Mount Washington using the world's first cog railway, visited the White Mountains National Forest, learnt how maple syrup is made and rode the Conway Scenic Railway through the Crawford Notch. On our return journey to Boston we visited the coastal town of Salem but saw no broomsticks. The following morning we enjoyed a coach and walking tour of Boston before taking a high speed catamaran to watch whales. Our last morning and part of the afternoon was spent walking the streets and open spaces of what is a beautiful city. Boston's Logan Airport was our final U.S. destination before catching our evening flight home. Since this was a Great Rail Journeys' holiday it only seems fitting that the slide show mood is set by the playing of two digital sound recordings captured whilst on holiday. The first is the Mount Washington Cog Railway steam locomotive "Waumbek" summoning passengers prior to it and it's coach leaving the summit. The second, diesel locomotives 216 and 252 leaving Fabyan Station on the return journey to North Conway and sounding their horns before moving off and crossing Base Station Road.
